How to tell if it is an "EX" sniper (ex-sniper)
Pay attention to the year your rifle was made, that will determine what to look at below

PE/PEM Snipers
m/91-30 PE and PEM (1932-1940 and part of 1942)

Top Mount over the front of receiver (hex only)
Image

Any top mount will have CN, CH, or H? mark above the Tula arsenal mark on the barrel shank. But it could be a side mount also (see below).

Things to look for

(looking at the front of the receiver just behind the barrel shank)
Most of the time the screw holes will be plugged. You may or may not be able to see them.
But many times you will see the grind marks that are left behind

Sometimes the weld plugs do not take the bluing evenly as the the rest of the receiver and they stand out.

Some Finn captured top mounts still have the holes with the threads still in them.

Side Mount PE/PEM on the left side of the receiver

Any side mount will have CN, CH, or H? mark above the Tula arsenal mark on the barrel shank. But it could be a top mount also (see above).
Image

Things to look for

(pull the bolt back and look inside the receiver)
You will see two screw ends fairly close together. (spread wider and it is a PU mount - see below)
Outside will be flush where the screws were welded over and ground flush and re-blued. Sometime only grind marks are visible.

PU Snipers
m/91-30 PU (1942- on)

PU side mount on the left side of the receiver

Any Tula PU will have CN, CH, or H? mark above the Tula arsenal mark on the barrel shank if it is a Tula sniper.

If it is a Izhevsk arsenal sniper it will have either a scope number lined out or grind marks or an indent where the number used to be.

Things to look for

(pull the bolt back and look inside the receiver)
You will see two screw ends further apart than on the PEM side mounts.
Outside will be flush where the screws were welded over and ground flush and re-blued. Sometime only grind marks are visible.

Leave them as ex-snipers. Remember, no collectors collect ex-snipers that have been re-snipered. No value to them.
