Don Cossacks

Postby shatnerpossum » Thu Nov 27, 2008 10:26 pm

I've been researching the role of Cossacks in WW2. It appears large numbers of them fought with the Germans. One unit was a subdivision of the 40th Panzer, and was decimated at St. Lo.
What first got me on this topic of thinking were reproduction WW2 Cossack uniforms. This made me wonder: do they have WW2 Cossack reenactors?

At a WWII reenactment at Camp Roberts in March of 2005 one guy did have a Cossack Impression.  It was only for display and he did not wear it during the battle event.  That is the only time I have seen someone with that uniform.  It was quite nice looking.

Yeah, I heard online from somebody in 21st Panzer that an SS unit in Oregon does Cossack as a secondary impression.

I don't think its worth the effort to track down. I think I'll just do FJ on western front, and Russian on Eastern front.

IIRC, The soviets under Lenin and Stalin purged the Cossacks - leading them to fight with the White Army and for the Germans.

Yes, and then after the cossacks fought their way west and surrendered to British and American forces, they were shipped back to Russia and purged. Today they've made a recovery, particularly the Don Host. Quite a few of them even volunteered in that little scuffle with Georgia. Ossetians and Cossacks share the same stock.
